Description

This workshop will focus on establishing a climbing anchor using natural protection (e.g. trees) for the purpose of top roping.  It will focus specifically on anchor systems for climbing at Grand Ledge, MI although the concepts covered will be applicable in any similar climbing environment (Devil's Lake, WI).  This workshop is setup as a hybrid online/ in-person workshop.  Upon registering, participants will receive a confirmation email with instructions on how to access the online content.  It is expected that participants will become familiar with the content and if possible, practice some of the skills (such as knots) prior to the in-person meeting.  The earlier you register, the more time you will have to review the content!

As with most technical climbing skills instruction, this will be a very hands-on and interactive workshop conducted under close supervision of one of our experienced climbing wall instructors.  After covering the basics in the Climbing Center the class will head outside for more realistic practice at the top of our on-campus ravines (pending weather and general conditions).

This workshop will NOT cover placing traditional protection (stoppers, cams, etc...) for use in establishing an anchor.

Experience and Equipment

  • Knowledge of how to tie the climber's knots and belay is strongly recommended.
  • Standard climbing equipment can be provided at no additional charge upon request.  However, it is encouraged that you bring any personal climbing equipment that you own.
  • Anchor building materials will be provided for practicing during the workshop.

Cost
Varies based on affiliation ($10 GVSU Students)
