Group Exercise Instructor

Responsible for teaching group exercise classes. Instructors work a varied number of hours per week. This position reports to the Fitness & Wellness Program Coordinator. Starting wage is based on experience and skill. Need qualified instructors to teach Dance format classes, Kickboxing, SPINNING, Barre, Yoga, Toning, Cardiovascular and other group exercise classes. Duration: Academic year or until graduation

Hours: Varies, typically 1-3 with opportunity to teach events

Location: GVSU Recreation Center Fieldhouse


  • Prefer certification in AFAA, ACE, ACSM, NASM, Zumba, TurboKick, YogaFit, or any nationally recognized certification program. 
  • Non-certified, experienced instructors who have taught in a group fitness setting with a minimum of one-year experience may also apply.
  • Prior teaching experience.


  • A well-groomed appearance is mandatory. Appearance must be clean, neat and professional. Athletic attire and Recreation & Wellness top when teaching is required.


  • Follow all Recreation & Wellness department policies
  • Teach group exercise class
  • Participate in instructor mentor program
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Students become eligible for a step increase after two semesters of employment with the same department at the department’s discretion.
  • A student’s performance evaluation will be the tool used in the determination of a step increase.
  • Student’s hours must be entered into UltraTime before 5p on the Friday before Payroll hours are due.
