Zachary Willoughby 2018-2019 Recipient of Adam M. Malson Memorial Scholarship

Political science major Zachary Willoughby is the 2018-2019 recipient of the Adam M. Malson Memorial Scholarship. A native of Kalamazoo,  Zach joined the US Navy Reserve and began his studies at Grand Valley after graduating from Kalamazoo Central High School. He is currently a Petty Officer 3rd Class in the Navy and will complete his Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science in April 2020. After college, Zach hopes to serve on active duty as a Navy intelligence specialist and later to continue intelligence work for the U.S. government in a civilian contractor role.

GVSU alumnus Tim Zeeb established the Adam M. Malson Memorial Scholarship in honor of his dear friend and fallen hero, 1st Lieutenant Adam M. Malson. Lieutenant Malson was a Michigan native who was passionate about both politics and international events. During his college years, he focused on Political Science and related social sciences, obtaining nearly a 4.0 GPA while participating in collegiate athletics and the ROTC. Lieutenant Malson was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 31sst Infantry Regiment, based at Fort Drum, NY, and was killed in action while on patrol in Baghdad on February 19, 2005.

Tim Zeeb graduated from Grand Valley in 2002 with a B.A. in International Relations and minors in Political Science and German. He later earned an M.S. in Finance and is currently Managing Director at Conway MacKenzie, Inc. in the Detroit area. Tim says of his late friend Adam: “While only 23 years old, Adam experienced more in those years than many do in a lifetime. He was a loving husband, caring son, dear friend, and American hero.”

Congratulations to Zach on winning the Malson Scholarship, and many thanks to Tim for his very generous gift!
