Corinne Cavender 2018-2019 Batchelder Scholarship Winner

The Political Science Department is pleased to recognize Corinne Cavender, one of our Batchelder Scholars for 2018-2019. Funded by a generous grant from the Batchelder family, the Batchelder Political Science Scholarship honors Emeritus Professor John Thayer Batchelder, who taught political science at GVSU from 1969 until his retirement in 1997. Professor Batchelder’s interest in international cultures and political affairs, delight in adventure, and belief that direct experience adds greatly to student learning led him to organize and lead several overseas study programs, including ones that allowed more than 80 students to study in Russia and Poland from 1976-1990.

Corinne is a senior studying Political Science and Spanish and has been on the Dean’s List every semester at GVSU. She spent fall semester studying abroad in Australia. Corinne says, “I am studying Political Science because I am fascinated with how governments function. I am particularly interested in studying environmental and energy policy. During my study abroad in Australia this past semester, I was exposed to new ways of thinking about politics and policy that I would not have learned in the U.S. I was able to strengthen my passion for protecting our Earth while I was abroad.  Someday, I hope to either earn a master’s degree in energy policy or work to help companies reduce their environmental impact.  I am very grateful to the GVSU Political Science department and my study abroad experience for showing me interesting and creative ways to tackle the issues facing our world.”

Congratulations to Corinne!
