Policy Statement
A. Policy Statement
This policy is intended to establish a uniform system of regulating posters, banners, yard signs, chalking and digital signage (“Postings”) across campus. The primary function of a Posting must be to provide information. All Postings on Grand Valley State University (“University”) owned and controlled property, must be handled consistent with these standards. Postings are only permitted by members of the University community, unless otherwise approved, as outlined in more detail within the accompanying procedures.
B. General Rules
All individuals seeking to display a Posting on campus must abide by the following guidelines when creating Postings and submitting requests for Postings on University owned and controlled property. These guidelines do not pertain to Postings within the private office space of employees or private residences. Postings inconsistent with this policy are subject to removal by University officials.
- Postings must have the primary function of providing information about a University organization or event.
- Postings must contain the name of the organization or department responsible for the posting or event. Postings promotional in nature, must include contact information for the person or group responsible (such as URL, email, social media handle, or phone number).
- Consistent with the University’s Grounds and Facilities Use Policy, Postings must not contain Expressive Activity and must not contain unprotected speech as defined.
- Consistent with the University’s Political Activity Policy, Postings must not promote or oppose a candidate for office or a ballot question.
- Postings must not contain information inconsistent with the University’s Policy Prohibiting Discrimination, Harassment, and Other Misconduct.
- Postings must comply with all other University policies and handbooks.
- Postings will hang for a maximum of 1 month (or until the day after the event has concluded, whichever occurs first) unless otherwise indicated in this policy or the accompanying procedures.
- The unauthorized damaging, defacing, altering, tearing or removing of approved postings is prohibited.
- Postings must not include any promotion of the sale or use of drugs/alcohol.
- Postings must not include graphic portrayals.
- Postings must not include any promotion of unlawful activity.
- The University is not responsible for damage to, or the replacing of, unapproved postings.
- No material may be hung using a permanent or damaging adhesive.

See the accompanying Campus Posting Procedures , which have been established to provide clear guidance and alignment with this policy and the University Posting Guidelines. All individuals seeking to have Postings on campus must follow the procedures outlined.
