The purpose of this endowment is to provide scholarships to students who have excelled academically and athletically but who would not be able to attend GVSU without some financial assistance.

- Seeking a major in the Movement Science department
- Recipient must be an inter-collegiate athlete who meets the NCAA academic eligibility requirements

This scholarship was established to assist current GVSU undergraduate or graduate students for their leadership or involvement in activities to advance women in leadership in sport and physical activity.

The purpose of this award is to provide financial support to current GVSU undergraduate or graduate students who are seeking leadership and professional development opportunities relative to supplemental program and project work that relates directly to initiative and the advancement of women in leadership in sport and physical activity.

Since 1995, SHAPE America has awarded scholarships to outstanding undergraduate and graduate student members. The Ruth Abernathy Presidential Scholarship, developed by the past presidents of SHAPE America to honor deserving students, is awarded to three undergraduate students and two graduate students in January of each year. All scholarships are presented at the SHAPE America National Convention & Expo held in the spring.
Undergraduate awards are $1,250 each and graduate awards are $1,750 each. Recipients also receive a complimentary three-year SHAPE America membership.

The award is a $1,000 scholarship awarded annually to an undergraduate student. Recipients may spend the award in any manner they desire. Recipients will also receive a one-year complimentary student membership in SHAPE America. The application materials must be received by October 15. The recipient will be notified by January 15.
Eligibility
- The award is open to any student officially recognized as an undergraduate health education major at an accredited college/university in the United States or a U.S. territory.
- To be eligible, the applicant must be currently enrolled full-time (12 hours) at a college or university for both the fall and spring semesters of the academic year during which the student is applying. The student must have sophomore, junior or senior status at the time of application.
- Applicants must have a minimum, current overall grade point average of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale at the SHAPE America application deadline.
Awards
A variety of awards are available each year to physical education majors. The criteria for each award are listed below:
GVSU Major of the Year
- 3.5 GPA and 85 credit hours completed
- Involvement with campus/major activities
- Candidate will be chosen by Health and Physical Education faculty
- Awards Event takes place in April of each year
SHAPE (Society for Health and Physical Educators) MICHIGAN Major of the Year (2 awards given): The purpose of this award is to recognize students that are high achieving in academics and in the health and physical education community.
- 3.0 GPA or higher
- Must be Jr. or Sr. status
- Must be a member or willing to join SHAPE MICHIGAN
- Must show written record of service (see below) to school and/or community for a minimum of two years
- This scholarship is competitive

Midwest SHAPE: The Outstanding Student Award recognizes an undergraduate student who has displayed distinctive leadership and meritorious service to his/her profession of health, physical education, recreation, dance and/or sport.
Candidates shall be a current member of SHAPE America and shall be a current member of SHAPE Michigan.
Candidates shall have declared an undergraduate major in health, physical education, recreation, dance and/or sport or be currently enrolled in a professional preparation curriculum in content areas included as a part of the divisional structure of Midwest District, and be attending a college or university in Midwest District at the time of application for the award.
Candidates shall be recommended for award consideration by one of their college or university instructors and shall display distinctive leadership and meritorious service to their profession. Examples of types of meritorious contribution are as follows:
- Serves as a positive role model epitomizing personal health and enjoyment of physical activity;
- Displays distinctive leadership to the profession (i.e., college or university student organization, state affiliate activities);
- Exhibits meritorious service to the profession (i.e., community, college or university, state affiliate); and
- Participates in professional development opportunities (i.e., attends and/or presents at meetings, workshops, conferences, etc.).
