What are your undergraduate research mentor experiences?

Student Scholars Day, Student Summer Scholars, Honors senior project mentor, teacher of upper-level courses.

Would you briefly explain the focus of some of the most recent research you have mentored students in?

I have worked with music student to transcribe old non-printed sources and then turn them into performances, bringing forgotten music to life.

Why is mentoring undergraduate research an important component of your work?

When I find the right project and the student to match it, it is very satisfying to work closely with a student and bring him or her into the world of music-historical research.

If a student is interested in your field of research, what are some suggestions or tips you might share with them to help them get more involved and/or better prepared to engage in this type of research?

Read about the history of music, listen to lots of music, and think about how music is linked to other disciplines.

Who are some of your previous mentees, and what are they doing now?

Holly Cassell is beginning graduate school is musicology at the University of North Texas; Daniel Rhode is working as a composer and K-8 music teacher; Kait LaPorte is in the doctoral program in ethnomusicology at the University of Washington.
