Dr. Johnson Visits a School in Estonia
Spring 2025
Dr. Johnson has a long history of engaging with and learning about international teaching experiences. This spring she traveled to Estonia to spend a day visiting an Estonian school in the city of Tallinn. This was a part of a unique program called EduEstonia (https://visiteduestonia.com). The students at Tallinna Sudalinna Kool range in age from 7 to 15. They take a variety of classes such as robotics, English, Music, Physical Education, handicrafts, cooking, metal working, and the usual maths, science, etc. They engage in 3 hours of PE per week and health content is infused throughout the other classes. All meals are home cooked and follow strict health guidelines from the government to be healthy. I was able to eat lunch at school and it was amazing to have a warm, home cooked meal that was good for me. Cell phones are not allowed at school and they don't sell any junk food. Starting in grade 1 all students begin learning English and then in grade 6 they begin learning a second foreign language, typically Russian or German. I was visiting during a time where they were having a handbell concert by the older students and it was amazing to watch their performance and talent. Check out their FB page for more information. https://www.facebook.com/tallinnasydalinnakool
This was supported in part by a CSCE mini grant.
