As Dr. Abishek Balsamy-Kamaraj concludes his time at Grand Valley State University, we would like to recognize and thank him for the many contributions he has made to our students, department, and university community. Although his tenure at GVSU has been relatively brief, his impact has been significant and far-reaching. 

Since joining Grand Valley in 2022, Dr. Balsamy-Kamaraj has brought tremendous energy, creativity, and expertise to the Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering Department. A specialist in advanced manufacturing and additive manufacturing technologies, he quickly established himself as both an innovative educator and an active researcher. His passion for hands-on learning was evident in the courses he taught and developed, including the department's new course on additive manufacturing, which provided students with valuable opportunities to engage with emerging technologies through both classroom and laboratory experiences. 

Dr. Balsamy-Kamaraj also played a key role in expanding the department's research capabilities. As Director of the Additive Manufacturing Laboratory, he helped create new opportunities for student research and industry engagement. His research program attracted more than $1.3 million in grants and external funding, supporting projects that advanced manufacturing innovation while creating meaningful educational opportunities for students. 

Perhaps most importantly, Dr. Balsamy-Kamaraj invested deeply in student success. Whether advising graduate research projects, mentoring capstone teams, supporting student organizations, or serving as faculty advisor to the Casting Club and the FIRST Alumni Network of Grand Valley, he consistently demonstrated a commitment to helping students grow professionally and personally. His mentorship was recognized in 2023 when he received Grand Valley's Outstanding Graduate Mentorship Award. 

Beyond Grand Valley, Dr. Balsamy-Kamaraj has built an impressive career as an educator, researcher, and leader in the manufacturing community. His work has resulted in numerous scholarly publications, conference presentations, invited talks, and professional leadership positions. He has earned recognition for both teaching and research excellence, including Outstanding Teaching Awards and honors for his doctoral research. 

While we are sorry to see him leave, we are grateful for the enthusiasm, innovation, and collegial spirit he brought to our department. We thank Dr. Balsamy-Kamaraj for his many contributions to Grand Valley State University and wish him continued success in the next chapter of his career. We look forward to following his future accomplishments and know that he will continue to make a positive impact wherever his journey takes him.
