As Professor Princewill “Dr. A” Anyalebechi prepares to retire, we celebrate not only an extraordinary career, but also the lasting impact he has had on generations of students, colleagues, and the engineering profession. After 25 years at Grand Valley State University and more than four decades in industry and higher education, Dr. Anyalebechi leaves behind a legacy of excellence, mentorship, and service.

Dr. Anyalebechi began his academic journey in England, earning a B.S.-equivalent Higher Diploma in Metallurgy, followed by an M.Sc. in Metallurgical Quality Control and a Ph.D. in Metallurgy from Brunel University. His doctoral research focused on hydrogen behavior in aluminum alloys, a topic that would remain a central theme throughout his professional career.

Before joining Grand Valley State University in 2001, Dr. Anyalebechi built an impressive industrial and academic career. He spent more than a decade at Alcoa Technical Center, where he advanced from Research Engineer to Scientific Associate, conducting pioneering research in aluminum casting, solidification, microstructure development, and hydrogen-related phenomena in metals. His work contributed to process innovations, earned multiple technical awards, and resulted in two U.S. patents. He later served as a Technical Specialist at Alcoa and as an Associate Professor at James Madison University, where he helped develop new engineering curricula and mentor future engineers.

At Grand Valley, Dr. Anyalebechi became a cornerstone of engineering education. He developed and taught numerous undergraduate and graduate courses in materials science, manufacturing processes, biomaterials, and failure analysis. He created many of the department’s materials-focused courses and served in multiple leadership roles, including Acting Chair and Chair of the Product Design and Manufacturing Engineering Program.

Known affectionately by generations of students as “Dr. A,” he earned a reputation as a demanding yet deeply caring educator. His excellence in teaching was recognized with the 2011 Michigan Distinguished Professor of the Year Award and the Grand Valley Glen A. Niemeyer Outstanding Faculty Award. He also received the Significant Influential Engineering Professor Award in 2019, selected by graduating seniors in recognition of his lasting impact on their education and careers.

Beyond the classroom, Dr. Anyalebechi maintained an active and internationally recognized research program. He authored or co-authored more than 57 technical publications, delivered presentations around the world, edited numerous conference proceedings, contributed invited book chapters, and was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (FIMMM) in 2013. His research on hydrogen in aluminum, casting processes, and microstructure evolution has advanced both scientific understanding and industrial practice.

Equally important has been his commitment to service. He advised students, mentored the National Society of Black Engineers chapter, served on university committees, and contributed extensively to professional organizations including TMS, ASM International, ASEE, and IOM3.

As Dr. Anyalebechi begins his retirement, we celebrate a career defined by scholarship, innovation, leadership, and an unwavering dedication to students. His legacy will continue through the thousands of engineers he taught, mentored, and inspired. He leaves an indelible mark on Grand Valley State University and the engineering profession.
