Bethany Christian Services: Transitional Foster Care Program
Due to the increasing numbers of unaccompanied minors crossing the Mexico-United States border, Bethany Christian Services has started a program that provides temporary licensed foster homes for children who crossed the border alone and were detained. Bethany Christian Services provides these children with education through our own on site school, medical services, access to lawyers, etc., all while working with the youth's caseworker to reunify the child with their family in the United States.

We would like to invite Spanish speaking volunteers or interns to consider helping at our on-site educational program for the youth which runs from 9am to 3pm, Monday through Friday. No educational background necessary! You can help in various ways, whether it be helping a child with their English, reading a book with a child, playing indoor/outdoor recreational activities, or just being someone they can listen to. We also have various BSW and MSW caseworkers and supervisors on staff, who can provide an internship for someone in the Human Services field.

Department of Human Services has recently implemented a new online application system called MI Bridges.  As a result, we have also restructured our local office lobby plan.  This new plan focuses on customer service and efficiently serving our client’s needs through the utilization of kiosks for the application process.   Our mission here at DHS is to improve the quality of life in Michigan by providing services to vulnerable children and adults that will strengthen the community and enable families and individuals to move toward independence.  MI Bridges and our new lobby plan are two new key components that are both working effectively to promote our mission.

We would like to invite Spanish speaking volunteers and interns to consider working with us to provide daily assistance in our lobby to support our community’s most vulnerable population. Working with our clients will provide the volunteers and interns with experience in the human services field, as well as provide them with real, everyday conversations with the Spanish speaking community.

The Hispanic Center of Western Michigan is seeking college students and professionals to assist with after-school programming for the Supporting Our Leaders (SOL) Youth Program. SOL serves over 450 youth between the ages of 14-21 each year through various services, including after-school tutoring. We primarily serve at-risk Hispanic youth who reside in underserved areas of Kent County and are living at or below the poverty line.

SOL is a resource for local youth to get homework help, learn about colleges/scholarships, and develop leadership skills through civic engagement and volunteerism. We currently have opening for tutors & office assistants. Spanish is NOT required, but it is preferred. This is a great opportunity for students to learn more about the Hispanic community in Grand Rapids, practice their Spanish, and give back to local organizations.

Grandville Avenue Arts & Humanities Cook Library Schools Program
(1100 Grandville Ave SW, Grand Rapids; accessible by bus)

This program is seeking volunteers to work with students in the following areas: homework help, playing chess, reading in English and/or Spanish. Many of the students are Hispanic, but proficiency in Spanish is not required to volunteer.

Volunteers are asked to make a semester-long commitment of one afternoon per week, Monday or Tuesday from 4-6. All volunteers will need to attend a mandatory volunteer orientation and also complete a criminal background check.

Southwest Community Campus
(801 Oakland Avenue Southwest, Grand Rapids; accessible by bus)

This PreK-grade 8 school is part of the Grand Rapids Public School system. The student population is comprised of both native Spanish- and native English- speaking students. Students study academic content (Math, Language Arts, Social Studies, Science) in both Spanish and English.

They are looking for volunteer to work with individuals and/or small groups of students in the classroom during the school day (9:30-4). Depending on the grade level and activity, different levels of Spanish are required. You will be assigned based on your level of proficiency, preference in grade level, and also availability.

Jenison Public Schools
(Bursley Elementary: 1195 Port Sheldon St, Jenison; Rosewood Elementary: 2370 Tyler St., Jenison)

JPS has two elementary schools with Spanish immersion programs. These programs deliver content area instruction (Math, Science, Language Arts, Social Studies) in Spanish to native English speaking students. Students who volunteer with this program need to have strong Spanish skills and be able to maintain conversations in Spanish, minimum of SPA 322. Please indicate your availability (days & times) in the message as there are multiple opportunities.

West Michigan Refugee


Hours: 2-8 hrs per week 

Commitment Period: College students: at least 4 months; high school students: at least 5-6 months

Report to: Program Coordinator


West Michigan Refugee Education and Cultural Center tutors are responsible for tutoring students attending the after school program at least once a week. Tutors report progress and/or issues to the After School Program Coordinator, or the Program Coordinator.


* High School or equivalent degree required

* Ability to work with diverse populations and culturally competent.

* Willingness to work with a variety of age groups and tutor in multiple subjects.

* Self-motivation to identify and aid students in their daily tutoring needs.

* Ability to work on a team

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Commit to volunteering consistently on a weekly basis.

Work with one to four students per session.

Attend and tutor K-12 students attending West Michigan Education and Cultural Center, including:

Providing homework assistance to students who bring work to complete.

Reading with students after required work is completed.

Engaging students in learning activities such as games, puzzles, projects, creative assignments, worksheets, or any other appropriate activities.

Work with family coordinators to identify, advocate for, and work on the real educational needs of students enrolled at WMRECC.

Report progress and/or issues of concern to After School Program Coordinator

Demonstrate teamwork and integrity with staff, fellow volunteers, students, and their families.

Build relationships with students on a weekly basis.

Ensure a safe and clean learning environment through assisting with after-program clean up.

Attend required trainings.

Tutors who are able to provide pre- and post-tutoring transportation to students – almost all of whom live in the neighborhood of our center – are asked to sign waivers. We always have a need for transportation help!

Volunteer will assist our Spanish-speaking cook in preparing lunch for the parents and children (the majority of whom are Spanish-speaking) involved in the PREP program. No culinary experience or talent necessary!
