Pre-Travel
- Update Your Devices: Ensure all your devices (smartphone, laptop, tablet) are updated with the latest software and security patches.
- Backup Your Data: Backup important data (photos, documents, contacts) on external drives or secure cloud storage ex. OneDrive.
- Enable Strong Authentication: Use strong passwords combined with two-factor authentication on all devices/accounts.
- Turn Off Auto-Connect: Disable features that automatically connect your devices to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth networks.
- Prepare for Physical Security: Invest in a high-quality laptop lock and consider privacy screens for your devices.
During Travel
- Use Secure Wi-Fi Connections Avoid using public Wi-Fi hot spots for sensitive transactions.
- Use a VPN: Connect through a Virtual Private Network (VPN).
- Be Cautious with Public Charging Stations: Use a battery pack or ensure charging stations do not access data by using a data blocker.
- Disable Bluetooth Connectivity: Keep Bluetooth disabled when not in use to avoid unauthorized access.
- Monitor Your Accounts for Suspicious Activity: Monitor your accounts for any unauthorized access or transactions.
- Secure Your Physical Devices: Always keep your devices with you and never leave them unattended in public places.
Post Travel
Post Travel
- Change Passwords: Change your passwords for key accounts in case they were compromised during travel.
- Check for Updates Again: Make sure your devices are still running the most current software, as vulnerabilities can be exploited while you are distracted.
- Review App Permissions: Review and adjust app permissions in case you temporarily changed them during your travels.
- Check Your Financial Statements: Monitor your financial statements for any irregular activities that may indicate identity theft.
