This is a common question that we receive!

If you know what you will be majoring in, we recommend contacting the department to see whether they have any specific recommendations or requirements for a laptop. If they do not, it is a user preference of either a Mac or a PC. In general, we do not recommend Chromebooks.

Need to print a paper or project while at GVSU? We've got you covered with GV Print—a cloud-based printing system that makes it easy.

You can upload your document online and release it to print at any computer lab during open hours or at designated print stations across campus.

Every student gets $25 in free printing per semester. To get started, check out the Printing on Campus and GVPrint Information Knowledge Base article.

Bringing a smart TV, gaming console, or smart home device to campus? Awesome! Just know that these types of devices need to be registered to connect to GV-Gamenet WiFi.

Smart home devices like smart speakers—including non-camera enabled options such as Amazon Echo or Apple HomePod—can be registered too. Devices with built-in cameras aren't allowed, per university policy.

Using a wired connection? No need to register—just plug into an active Ethernet port in your dorm room. If it's not working, request activation by submitting an IT Services ticket through the Service Portal.

Laptops, tablets, and phones don't need to be registered at all. Just connect to GV-Student Wi-Fi and sign in with your GVSU username and password.

All GVSU applications and websites can be accessed at my.gvsu.edu. Once logged in, you will be able to search and select the application or website needed.

The Service Portal is home to knowledge base articles, service information, and more. Easily submit tickets for assistance and track them. services.gvsu.edu

Blackboard is the university's learning management system. Students use Blackboard for checking grades, assignment work, discussion boards, taking quizzes, tests and more. Go to lms.gvsu.edu to sign into Blackboard.

Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor are tools that faculty can use to create a secure testing environment for online assessments. Students can find more information and resources in the Service Portal Knowledge Base, including instructions for downloading and installing LockDown Browser on a personal device or on a Chromebook.

Yes, IT hires students for a variety of positions. Students interested in working within IT are encouraged to look for open postings through Workday. 

GVSUAlert is the university's Emergency Notification System. Alternative phone numbers and emails can also be added. Sign up and manage communication preferences at gvsu.edu/alert.

Did you know GVSU has over 15 public computer labs across campus? Whether you need to print, use course-specific software, or focus without distractions, there's likely a lab nearby—many even have techs on hand to help.

Labs are open for general use when not scheduled for classes.

One of the biggest threats? Phishing.
That's when scammers try to trick you into giving up your passwords or personal info by sending fake emails, links, or websites that look real.

Watch out for messages that:

• Seem urgent

• Ask you to verify personal info

• Offer something too good to be true

If something feels off — don't click.

Let's work together to keep GVSU cyber safe!

MFA adds another layer of security to your account by requiring two or more verification methods. Typically, this includes something you know (your password) and something you've got (a code sent to your phone). By implementing MFA, even if someone/guesses or steals/your password, they still need the second factor to access your account. This makes unauthorized access significantly/more difficult.

There are many reasons why MFA is important to the protection and security of your online accounts and information. Here are several:

Enhanced Security: MFA adds layers of security, making it significantly harder for unauthorized users to gain access to devices, networks, or databases. Even if a password is compromised, the additional authentication factors can prevent unauthorized access.

Protect Against Common Attacks: It guards against phishing, social engineering, and password attacks by adding extra security layers.

Protect Your Digital Identity: College life is filled with online activities, from submitting assignments to managing finances. MFA ensures that you are the only one who can access your accounts.

Stay One Step Ahead: As cybersecurity threats evolve, MFA is a proactive approach to stay ahead of these changes.

MFA is mandatory for all GVSU students to access university accounts. All students will enroll in MFA using a platform called Okta. Learn more on the Information Security webpage.

Beginning fall 2025, Microsoft OneDrive will replace your personal network drive (often called the N: drive).
With OneDrive, you can:

• Access your files anywhere – from any device with an internet connection
• Keep your work safe – automatic cloud backup helps protect against data loss
• Share and collaborate easily – work on files with classmates in real time
• Stay connected with Microsoft 365 – seamless integration with Word, Excel, Teams, and more

What's Changing
Your files from “My Documents,” the N: drive, or department L: drives will be moved to OneDrive. All campus lab computers—both Mac and Windows—are now set up for OneDrive. Just sign in with your GVSU credentials to access your files and save new ones directly to OneDrive. This means you can start a project in the library, pick it up in a computer lab, and finish it on your laptop without ever needing a flash drive.

Why It Matters
OneDrive gives you flexibility, security, and convenience—whether you're working on campus, at home, or anywhere in between.
