What is Purim?

  • Purim is a holiday that celebrates and commemorates the saving of the Jews from a threatened massacre, recounted in the book of Esther.
    • The story centers on Esther, a young Jewish woman who serendipitously rises to be queen of Persia, keeping her Jewish identity hidden from the king, in an atmosphere of Jewish persecution.
  • Purim is a carnival-eqsue day filled with revelry, dressing up in costumes, feasting, drinking, and the reading of the Scroll of Esther, the megillah.
