Description
What is Great Lent?
- Great Lent, or the Great Fast, is perhaps the most important season of fasting for many denominations of Eastern Christianity.
- This season commemorates Jesus' withdrawal into the wilderness before his crucifixion. Fasting during this time is seen as an act of devotion and penance.
- Lent lasts for 40 continuous days and culminates with a great feast of Pascha, or Easter Sunday.
- The first day of Great Lent is known as Clean Monday, which refers to the purification of the body and spirit in preparation for this season of spiritual significance.
