Statement from President Haas in the Wake of Tragic Events Targeting the Jewish Community in Pittsburgh

October 27, 2018

Dear Campus Community,

I am deeply saddened, disturbed, and outraged by the shooting that took place today at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. All of our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives or were injured. We must also acknowledge the bravery of first responders who were shot in the line of duty rushing to the aid of the congregation.

Grand Valley State University recognizes the responsibility we have to speak out against efforts that attempt to divide or target people based on identity. We condemn these acts as reprehensible and contrary to the values of our campus and our country. We will continue to unapologetically educate to interrupt intolerance and address hate when it shows up as acts of intimidation and violence.

To our Jewish faculty, staff and students know that we stand with you. The university is ready to provide support and resources to all those impacted. Of course, an attack like this impacts our entire community. Now, more than ever, we must remain vigilant in the face of bigotry and strengthen our care for one another. We ask the university community to Speak Up in the face of anti-Semitism and other forms of oppression. When you see something, say something. Please be certain to utilize the bias reporting process or contact the Grand Valley Police Department if you have any concerns.

The well-being of our campus community is our top priority. The University Counseling Center offers support for students experiencing overwhelming emotions following a tragic event. Please reach out to the UCC at (616) 331-3266 for services, and the Human Resources Officeprovides a number of resources for employees. Campus Interfaith Resources in the Division of Inclusion and Equity is also available for support. Coordinator Kevin McIntosh can be reached by phone at (616) 331-3207 or by email at [email protected].

A community space for dialogue and support has been organized for Monday, October 29 at 2 p.m. in the Office of Multicultural Affairs (1240 KC).

You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Very respectfully,

Thomas J. Haas, President
Grand Valley State University
