Job Summary

The Telecommunications Specialist for Voice Networks is responsible for programming telephone system software, installation, repair, and preventative maintenance of the University telephone systems.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Maintain and monitor the usage of the Cisco VoIP network and telecommunications systems      
  • Maintain and monitor the usage of the Phone System
  • Plan, design, implement, support and provide user-training and documentation of the University phone system
  • Moves, adds and changes of telephony equipment.
  • Monitors and analyzes phone system performance; provides corrective solutions and implements them.
  • Evaluate, prioritize and implement system modifications and upgrades.
  • Assist Management in the analysis of emerging IP network and telecommunications technologies.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Non-Essential Functions:

  • Install voice and data network components and other communications equipment connecting units with inside and outside service wires.
  • Checks installed equipment for proper operation.
  • Installation of network cabling and switches
  • Installs and repairs communication wiring/cables, splices cables, waterproofs cables, and similar duties.
  • Performance of these duties may require working in tunnels or on ladders.
  • Specifies, trains for and monitors the use of test equipment.
  • Provides technical assistance to users to determine system needs and cost.
  • Designs/maintains the cable plant for new data/telephone networks.
  • Maintains communication/fiber optic equipment and parts inventory/records; requisitions parts and equipment according to procedures.
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains phones, lines and equipment used in a network    - configuration between campuses and remote locations.
  • Documents work performed. Maintains accurate records of software and appropriate hardware settings, stating equipment location and features, as-built drawings of all telecommunication voice systems and complete system wire logs.
  • Responsible for maintaining skill level and knowledge of developments within the field by participation in training opportunities, studying manuals, and reading journals and technical publications.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school graduate supplemented by an associate degree in electronics of data communications or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Minimum of four years in a comprehensive voice installation and repair facility running of local and metropolitan area networks.
  • Experience with IP Telephony
  • Working Knowledge of IP addressing and routing
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully maintain positive interpersonal relationships.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully provide quality customer service.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully maintain satisfactory work performance and attendance records.
  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully work independently and organize own work.
  • Demonstrated experience to physically perform the duties of the job such as lifting equipment, laying wires in tunnels, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience to work with vendor/contractors in implementing various projects.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in Siemens phone system
  • Experience with Cisco Call Manager
  • Bachelor's degree in related field.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Substantial experience in construction of wire plant for voice, data and fiber.
  • Experience in telephone line, trunk circuits and basic telephony principals.

Supervision Received:

Receives minimal supervision from a designated supervisor.  Much of the work is self-initiated.  Person is expected to function with considerable independence and apply appropriate policies and procedures within the assigned area of responsibility. .

Supervision Exercised:

Hire, train, schedule and coordinate the work of student employees and may act as lead worker to PSS staff members within the department/unit/division.
