RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions:

  • Assist with the installation and maintenance of Data Network Equipment. The position will also be assisting with the installation and maintenance of the Cable Plant.
  • Assemble and install data network components and other communications equipment.
  • Assist with installation of racks, servers, storage systems and other equipment as required.
  • Oversee the proper installation and system support of Data Center Monitoring and Security Systems including Cameras
  • Install and support monitoring software packages
  • Check installed equipment for proper operation.
  • Install and repair data wiring/cables. Performance of these duties will require working in tunnels and on ladders.
  • Assist professional staff, outside technicians and contractors with installation, implementation and troubleshooting related to the university voice, data, and video systems.
  • Installation and testing of wireless networking equipment.
  • Provides technical assistance to users to determine system needs and cost.
  • When equipment malfunctions use industry approved testing procedures, locates and diagnoses the nature of defect, and repairs malfunctions.
  • Document work performed.
  • Maintain accurate records of appropriate hardware settings, stating equipment location and features, as built drawings of all telecommunication systems, and system cable records.
  • Responsible for maintaining skill level and knowledge of developments within the field by participation in training opportunities, studying manuals, and reading journals and technical publications.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school graduate.
  • Minimum of two years in a comprehensive data installation and repair facility running local and metropolitan area networks.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully maintain positive interpersonal relationships.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully operate office equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully provide quality customer service.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully maintain satisfactory work performance and attendance records.
  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully work independently, organize own work and coordinate work activities of others.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers.
  • Demonstrated ability to physically perform the duties of the job such as lifting equipment, laying wires in tunnels, etc.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Substantial experience in construction of wire plant for voice, data and fiber.
  • Experience configuring wireless devices.

Supervision Received:

Receives minimal supervision from a designated supervisor.  Much of the work is self-initiated.  Person is expected to function with considerable independence and apply appropriate policies and procedures within the assigned area of responsibility. .

Supervision Exercised:

Hire, train, schedule and coordinate the work of student employees and may act as lead worker to PSS staff members within the department/unit/division.
