Job Summary

Assist in Course Materials Department & provide quality customer service and assist with ordering merchandise and maintaining inventory records.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide customer service on the sales floor & via telephone by responding to customer inquiries and resolving concerns.
  • Place routine purchase orders with vendors. Monitor receiving status, follow up on any problems (short-ships/damages), make necessary system adjustments & alert Course Materials Manager of ongoing issues.
  • Maintain stock levels in respective departments/locations:  initiate transfers to & from the Grand Rapids store (including web order requests), oversee access card stock, complete physical inventories and place reorders.
  • Make course material purchasing and sell back decisions, using sales history data and enrollment information. Contact faculty & academic departments when necessary.
  • Supervise physical set up of sales floor & shelf tag placement.
  • Schedule student staff and approve payroll.
  • Process routine paperwork:  review invoices and credits and approve for payment.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Non-Essential Functions:

  • Order office supplies for departments.
  • Assist with sell back: clean, sort, tag and stock inventory.
  • Assist on the sales floor or cash register as needed, and perform other duties as assigned.
  • Responsible for receiving and pricing course packs from Copy Center and processing any paperwork.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Minimum of three years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience with various computer software applications such as Microsoft Office and/or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully operate office equipment.
  • Data entry experience.
  • Typing and spelling competency with grammar and proofreading skills.
  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully provide quality customer service
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully work independently, organize own work and coordinate work activities of others.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully maintain satisfactory work performance and attendance records.
  • Ability to successfully maintain positive intercultural and interpersonal relationships.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Some college course work.
  • Experience in higher education.
  • Experience in a college bookstore or other retail environment.
  • Knowledge of numerous software applications and an aptitude for technology.
  • Knowledge of book publishers and their policies.
  • General knowledge of purchasing policies and procedures.
  • Willingness to work flexible schedule with some evening and weekend hours.
  • Demonstrated experience to successfully perform mathematical calculations with speed and accuracy.

Supervision Received:

Receives general instruction from a designated supervisor but is generally expected to work independently.

Supervision Exercised:

Hire, train, supervise, schedule and coordinate the work of student employees and may act as lead worker to other PSS staff members within the department/unit/division.
