Grand Valley is celebrating the environment and sustainability throughout April in honor of Earth Day on April 22. The festivities are starting earlier in the month to better align with when students are on campus, said Yumiko Jakobcic, director of the Office of Sustainability.
As one of Grand Valley’s core values, sustainability is reflected through year-round programming and efforts to make campus facilities as energy efficient as possible. The Princeton Review named Grand Valley one of its Top Green Colleges , ranking it No. 1 in Michigan and No. 13 in the nation. The Office of Sustainability Practices also recently submitted its 2026 Stars report to the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), which grants ratings on the overall sustainability of a university’s campus, course catalogue and other factors.
