As we look back on another academic year, we celebrate the success of our graduates, the Lakers who have committed themselves to leaving their mark on the world, along with those who will continue pursuing their degrees next fall. We reflect on the research from faculty and students that will continue to have a profound impact on our communities. These achievements are the result of dedication, passion, curiosity and resilience.

As we reflect, we also look forward. We reconfirm our commitment to the success of our students and the incredible work of our faculty and staff. As Grand Valley looks toward its next chapter, its course has been shaped by the very Lakers the university serves.

Over the last year, thousands of campus community members offered input during engagement sessions. These conversations brought insight into current campus life, teaching and learning, and spurred ideas for new possibilities for our university and community. This collaboration and input helped form Reach Higher Together, Grand Valley’s strategic plan for the future.

Four commitments make up the foundation of Reach Higher Together: Empowered Educational Experience, Lifelong Learning, Impact-Driven Discovery, and Educational Equity and Well-being. These commitments are grounded in academics, research, extracurriculars and all aspects of campus life.

In this issue of Grand Valley Magazine, you will read about these commitments in action, such as the two alumni who are leading the integration of artificial intelligence into player development and scouting for Major League Baseball teams, or the student maximizing their internship with the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory, focusing on advancing technology for spacecraft control. Stories like these and others in this issue are examples of how Lakers turn opportunity into reality.

As we turn to our next chapter, I want to express my deepest gratitude to the thousands of Lakers who helped shape our strategic plan and the countless Lakers who will continue to create new opportunities, bring thoughtful ideas and lead our university into the future.

PHILOMENA MANTELLA
