Permanent link for "How Do I Join Greek Life?" A Step-by-Step Guide from a GVSU Student Who Has Been There on May 1, 2025
If you're reading this, you’re probably curious about joining a fraternity or sorority at GVSU, and honestly, I was in your shoes not that long ago. I wasn’t sure where to start, what questions to ask, or how to know if Greek Life was right for me. Spoiler alert: it was one of the best decisions I made in college.
Whether you’re brand new to this world or just figuring out your options, here’s a super simple guide to help you take those first steps toward joining a values-based community here at GVSU.
Step 1: Learn About Greek Life
First things first—get the basics! Attend a campus event during move-in week, follow @GVSUGreekLife on Instagram, or explore the website to start learning about what fraternities and sororities are actually about (hint: it’s more than just letters and T-shirts).
Step 2: Explore the Councils & Chapters
Did you know GVSU has four different councils that all serve different kinds of fraternities and sororities?
Interfraternity Council (IFC) - The Interfraternity Council includes fraternities historically based on brotherhood and leadership development. While many members identify as men, IFC organizations are open to all students interested in building strong connections, growing as leaders, and being part of something greater than themselves.
Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) - MGC is home to culturally based fraternities and sororities that were founded to uplift underrepresented communities and celebrate diverse identities. These organizations promote belonging, empowerment, and cultural awareness; all students are welcome to explore what MGC offers.
National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) - The NPHC represents the “Divine Nine” historically Black fraternities and sororities, organizations rooted in social justice, cultural pride, and community leadership. While they honor their rich Black and African American heritage, membership is open to any student committed to their values and traditions.
Panhellenic Association - The Panhellenic Association is made up of organizations that have historically centered on sisterhood, empowerment, and service. These chapters are open to any student who connects with their mission and values, and are excited to welcome individuals from all walks of life.
Check out which councils you're most drawn to, and don’t be afraid to explore more than one!
Step 3: Attend Info Sessions
You don’t have to go in without any information. Each council hosts info sessions, meet-and-greets, or even council-wide Q&As where you can learn about the joining process, ask questions, and meet current members. Keep an eye on your email and @GVSUGreekLife for dates!
Step 4: Express Your Interest
Once you’ve found a council or chapter you connect with, fill out the appropriate interest or registration form. (Don’t worry—we’ll walk you through what’s needed based on which council you’re joining.)
Step 5: Participate in Recruitment or Intake Activities
Every council has its own joining process:
-
IFC and Panhellenic usually hold structured recruitment weeks in the fall.
-
NPHC and MGC have individual chapter intake processes, which often include interest meetings and interviews.
Just be yourself, ask thoughtful questions, and find where you feel a sense of purpose and belonging.
Step 6: Accept Your Invitation!
Once you’ve been extended an invitation to join (also called a “bid” or an “offer”), take time to celebrate the moment! You’re stepping into a community that values you and believes in your potential. Your Greek journey is just beginning!
Final Thoughts
Greek Life isn’t about fitting into a mold. It’s about finding your people, growing as a leader, and becoming part of something bigger than yourself. If you're even thinking about joining, take that first step. You never know what could come next.
