President Philomena V. Mantella introduced Grand Valley alumna and Michigan Supreme Court Justice Kyra Harris Bolden during an event as someone who the Laker Nation can look toward with great pride.

Bolden was the keynote speaker at the March 16 EqualiTEA, hosted by the Center for Women and Gender Equity and held in the Kirkhof Center. She is the first Black woman to hold that seat.

"What you have accomplished in the 13 years since you have left Grand Valley is incredible," Mantella said. "You are a lifelong learner, you made lifelong connections on campus and throughout Michigan and you are committed to public service — plus you are a new mother.

"It's a great honor for the Laker Nation to call you their own."

During Women's History Month, Mantella said Bolden's story serves as a reminder of the profound achievements of women, and also the steps needed for progress to continue.
