Faculty and staff members who have given presentations, were
recognized for outstanding contributions or had their research
published are detailed below. The campus community can submit
a sketch online for future publication.
In the News Joel Potrykus, assistant professor of
film and video, was invited to visit the Criterion Closet,
a popular YouTube series where filmmakers select and discuss their
favorite movies. In the video,
Potrykus describes how his students surprised him at the end of the
semester by arranging a trip to New York for him to visit the
Criterion Closet.
Sketches College of Health Professions faculty Kelly
Aubry and Jenny Baweja; Theresa Bacon-Baguley,
CHP associate dean of research; and Shannon Owen,
director for Northern Michigan programs, gave a presentation,
"Building Bridges: Advancing a Health Care Workforce Pipeline in
Rural Michigan," at the Michigan Rural Health Conference in Mount Pleasant.
Jamie Owen-Deschryver, professor of psychology,
received the Golden Apple Award from the Wellness Information Team
peer educators. It is the first year for the Well-Being Awards
program, created to recognize faculty members who center their work
around students. Here is a list of all
faculty members who earned recognition.
Students Eleyna Debruin, Shawnacee Cota, Isabella Wylie, AJ
Colthrop, Ella Cowen and Zoe Arend
competed in the Asian American Hotel Owners Association Collegiate
Championship: Hotel Turnaround Competition in mid-April in New
Orleans. Fourteen collegiate teams competed in a simulation challenge
to turn around a hotel's performance. Duane Zuber,
affiliate faculty of hospitality and tourism management, said one team
of GVSU students earned the semi-finalist award.
Adrienne Wallace, associate professor of advertising
and public relations, was elected to serve the Commission on Public
Relations Education as director-at-large and co-chair of the research committee.
Highlights include a team of engineering students who placed third in a national competition, and an initiative from IT Innovation and Research that was featured in the 2025 Educause Horizon Report.
Two students earned scholarships from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters. Kara Van Dam and Al Shifflett were interviewed by media following a hard hat tour of the Battle Creek Innovation Hub.
