More than 120 students and their guests enjoyed the inaugural Admitted Student Spring Football Game April 18 at Lubbers Stadium.

Grand Valley welcomed more than 120 admitted students and their guests to the university’s inaugural Admitted Student Spring Football Game event April 18.

Designed to immerse future Lakers in the spirit, pride and community that define GVSU, the event offered an early and memorable introduction to campus life.

Hosted by the Office of Admissions and Recruitment in partnership with Athletics, the tailgate‑style experience invited members of the incoming first-year class to engage with the university in a setting that celebrated both tradition and belonging.

“This moment represents far more than a football experience; it reflects our institutional commitment to belonging as a foundational pillar of student success,” said B. Donta Truss, vice president for Enrollment Development and College Futures. “By welcoming admitted students into the very heart of Laker Nation, we are making an early and unmistakable statement: GVSU is a place where students are seen, valued and supported from day one. This is how we build connection, strengthen commitment and ultimately drive student success: by ensuring every learner understands they belong here before they ever step into the classroom.”

Attendees received a complimentary GVSU t‑shirt and enjoyed tailgate fare while connecting with university partners.

“For the first time, we were able to bring admitted students into a shared Grand Valley experience that combined community, tradition and excitement,” said Danny Velez, associate vice president for Admissions and Recruitment. “Moments like this help students see themselves here, not just academically but as part of something bigger.”

The afternoon culminated with students and guests cheering on the Laker football team, reinforcing a collective sense of excitement for what lies ahead.
