Participants who attended all or one of the five Philosophy in Nature events experienced West Michigan's natural beauty while learning more about their community and themselves.

The series started in July on the Lake Michigan shoreline and ended on the Valley Campus at the Arboretum in November. Each event began with reading excerpts from poets or philosophers and included time for journaling or a craft such as watercolor painting.

Areins Pelayo, visiting professor of philosophy, took this national idea and customized it for the campus community and the public. Peyalo hopes to continue the series next year.

A grant from the American Philosophical Association’s Berry Fund and the College of Liberal Arts' Professional Development Fund funded the program.
