Anthony (Tony) Nieuwkoop, professor emeritus of biomedical sciences

Retired faculty member
Anthony (Tony) Nieuwkoop, professor emeritus of biomedical sciences, died on June 3, 2024. He was 68.

Nieuwkoop served as a faculty member in the Biomedical Sciences for 25 years, including 10 as unit head, before retiring in 2021. Prior to joining Grand Valley's faculty, he worked as a faculty member at Hope College. Nieuwkoop earned a doctoral degree in cellular and molecular biology from the University of Michigan and completed a post-doctoral research fellowship at the University of Tennessee.

At Grand Valley, Nieuwkoop was among the core faculty members who established Student Scholars Day, a celebration of undergraduate research that marked its 25th anniversary in 2021. He was also active in Science Olympiad.

A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church of Holland on August 17 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the Steve Hecht Memorial Endowed Scholarship at GVSU.
