Jeffrey Potteiger was named dean of the College of the Health Professions after serving as interim dean since September. Potteiger joined Grand Valley in 2010. Below, he discusses priorities for CHP and his collaborative leadership style.
You were named interim dean of CHP last fall. What did you
learn about yourself over the past academic year?
Over the past academic year, I’ve learned that I truly enjoy
serving, leading and working alongside the students, faculty and staff
in the College of Health Professions. This experience has deepened my
sense of purpose within CHP and affirmed that I am exactly where I
want to be. It has also reinforced my commitment to continued service
at GVSU, where I see many more fulfilling years ahead in my
professional journey.
What are the top priorities for the college over the next
several years?
Over the next several years, the top priorities for the College
of Health Professions are to continue to build on the strong
foundation already in place, stay focused on preparing outstanding
health and health care professionals, and ensure ongoing support for
our dedicated faculty and staff. These efforts will help us sustain
excellence and advance our mission in meaningful ways within the
college, university and community.
How would you describe your leadership style, and how has it
evolved over your career at GVSU?
I would describe my leadership style as a blend of democratic,
coaching and transformational approaches. I value input from team
members and believe that collaborative decision-making leads to
stronger outcomes and higher morale. I’m also committed to mentoring
and developing the skills and potential of faculty and staff, and
fostering a supportive environment. At the same time, I strive to
inspire and motivate our faculty and staff around a shared vision,
creating a positive environment that drives collective success.
Over the course of my career at GVSU, my leadership style has evolved to become more collaborative, supportive and visionary. I’ve learned the value of listening deeply to diverse perspectives, mentoring others with intention and inspiring faculty and staff around a shared purpose. This growth has allowed me to better support faculty, staff and students, while fostering a positive and inclusive environment where everyone can flourish.
What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?
I enjoy regularly exercising, specifically swimming and walking
outdoors. I also enjoy working on home improvement projects,
especially painting. I like reading or listening to detective and spy
novels, and watching college sports.
