Steeve Buckridge, professor of African and Caribbean history, earned a Fulbright Scholar award and will teach in a country where he has led study abroad trips.

Buckridge will spend the 2022 calendar year in Namibia, in southern Africa, teaching at the University of Namibia and conducting research for his next book about women and the Namibian genocide.

"I will be conducting interviews for the book, which examines the relation between the traumatized black body and dress practices among the Herero women in Namibia," Buckridge said.

Over his long tenure at GVSU, Buckridge has directed study abroad programs and led faculty and staff partnership exchanges. He currently serves as the program director for the Namibia study abroad trip, which focuses on African history and cultures.

"It's a unique program that gives students insight into the diversity of Africa’s ecosystems and wildlife, cultures and complex history," he said.

Buckridge joins two other Grand Valley faculty members who earned Fulbright Scholar awards for the upcoming academic year.

The Fulbright Program is the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program.
