Description

The USTA Program is an Austrian program managed and financed entirely by the Austrian government, and therefore NOT a Fulbright opportunity If you would like to know more about Fulbright grants in Austria, please see the official Fulbright US Student country page and our website.

Therefore, students who have already applied for a Fulbright (ETA) grant this fall or recently completed a Fulbright experience are welcome to apply due to the different management and funding of this opportunity outside of the Fulbright Program!

Students who applied for the US Fulbright Student combined grant in Austria this fall are encouraged to separately apply to the USTA Program now to enhance their chances. The teaching portion would be the same on both programs. If they have not submitted for the USTA Program separately, they can only be considered for the combined grant and not for both options.

Recent alums with a completed bachelor’s or master’s degree, German proficiency, and interest in teaching in Austria can apply as well – no campus committee or interview is needed from our side.

Requirements for applicants:

  • a required German proficiency level of at least B1/Intermediate Mid by the time of application (applicants without the required proficiency cannot be considered),
  • US citizenship (dual US citizens are welcome to apply),
  • a completed bachelor’s degree (by summer 2025 for program year 2025–26).

Possible secondary school types to work in would be Gymnasium (academic secondary school; students’ age range: 11 to 18 years or 14 to 18 years) and vocational secondary school types focusing on business, engineering, preschool teacher training, hospitality, etc. (students’ age range: 14 to 19 years)

We also offer a limited number of spots at vocational secondary schools focused on agriculture, agricultural engineering, sustainability, the environment, biotechnology, animal husbandry, nutrition, viticulture, fruit/vegetable farming managed by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Regions and Water management

A teaching assistantship in Austria is a placement at one to two (rarely three) Austrian secondary schools from October until the end of May. TAs work with mentor teachers at their assigned schools.

Applicants need to be independent, resilient, adaptable to different environments, open, and reliable – they will be immersed in Austrian daily life and working culture.

Previous teaching experience is NOT required but can be beneficial – this includes (but is not limited to) tutoring, summer/language immersion/sports camp counselor duties, resident assistant in dorms, social/YMCA involvement, church or faith group leadership, Boy/Girl Scout leadership roles, previous TA jobs, or any other relevant career opportunities.

Most placements are NOT located in metropolitan areas, but in all nine provinces and in various environments (cities/ smaller towns/ rural areas). Placements in Vienna, Salzburg, and Tyrol (Innsbruck) are limited – the Austrian tourism website provides inspiration for alternative (secondary) location preferences.

You can find a roadmap to the application here and this page by Austria’s Agency for Education and Internationalisation (OeAD) provides an overview of the Austrian education system.

This event has been tagged as academic, careercenter, cuse, fellowships, and international.
