Description

The United Nations Association of The United States of America are seeking to engage a diversity of stakeholders interested in pursuing internships with the United Nations anywhere in the world. The issues on the United Nations’ agenda are as diverse as the careers they offer. For those who acquire an unpaid internship with the UN, you might be eligible to receive up to $13,000 in financial support through the UNA-USA Fellowship Initiative.

Current and previous Fellows have served UN internships in a wide range of UN agencies and offices, some of which include the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, the United Nations Information Center (UNIC), the Department of Global Communications (DGC), the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs, the United Nations Department for Safety and Security (UNDSS), United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). To receive the UNA-USA Fellowship, applicants must have already secured an internship with a UN agency prior to applying. Please visit here for a comprehensive list of internship opportunities within the United Nations.

Awards are based on eligibility requirements and the availability of funding. While there’s no hard deadline, we encourage you to apply at least one month prior to the start of your internship program. Once accepted as a fellow, you’ll receive a stipend to cover up to four months of living expenses during the internship. And yes; that means any living expense – from utilities and rent to food and transportation. All stipends are yours to spend at your own discretion. The UNA-USA Fellowship Initiative aims to diversify the applicant pool for United Nations and global agency employment. We encourage Americans interested in these careers to apply.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Must be an undergraduate senior, an undergraduate who has received their bachelor’s degree within one year of graduation (recent graduate), or a first-year master’s student
  • Must be affiliated with an accredited institution from the United States of America and within the United States of America.  Applicants are deemed ineligible if they are attending a university outside of the United States, or have received a degree from a foreign college
  • Must secure an unpaid internship with the UN or its affiliated agencies PRIOR to applying for the fellowship
  • Must demonstrate financial need
