Description of the Organization
Stariha & Brower, PLC, is a boutique law firm specializing in Michigan Liquor Law and the representation of licensees throughout Michigan. Unlike many law firms that "dabble" in Michigan liquor law, Stariha & Brower, PLC, works daily with liquor-licensed businesses, the Michigan Liquor Control Commission, and the issues that arise when obtaining or transferring a Michigan liquor license.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
A bulk of the work I was in charge of was analyses for proposed and enacted liquor law related legislation in the Michigan Legislature, federal requirements for manufacturing and exportation, as well as several other related issues. I kept the firm up to date on any progress or changes. I was also in charge of the firms social media presence and keeping regular information posted as well as drafting outlines for blog posts on the firms blog. I helped to prepare outlines of closing statements, bills of sale, promissory notes, purchase agreements, land contracts, and other documents related to the sale/transfer of real & personal property. On several occasions I attended Michigan Liquor Control Commission violation hearings & licensing appeals.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
I had the opportunity to do basic legal research, beyond what would normally be expected of an undergraduate student in order to help prepare for law school. I was able to refine the research skills that I had gained while at Grand Valley into skills specific to the career I plan on pursuing. I was also able to gain insight into transactional and liquor law.
Favorite Part of the Experience
Getting to sit in on violation hearings. Most of my internship was spent on a computer researching and preparing for cases. Seeing litigation in person was exciting and was rewarding to see the work I did used.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
After experiencing the law field for the first time in depth, I know I've made the proper choice. More than anything it has solidified my drive to attend law school and pursue a career as an attorney. It also gave me insight into the life of an attorney and provided me with the alternative that a life as a lawyer doesn't have to be behind a desk, but anywhere there's internet access.
