Description of the Organization

Hope Farm is a small group home for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities located in West Olive, MI. We have space for 4 residents with staff 24/7. We do scheduled outings and activities for the residents.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

At Hope Farm I provided daily care for adults with severe physical and developmental disabilities. This included assisting residents with activities of daily living including bathing, toileting, grooming, and feeding. It also included administering medications and implementing behavior support plans and monitoring any behavioral changes. I consistently supported their communication and vocabulary development through structured interaction as well. Overall, my responsibility was to maintain a safe, clean, and supportive living environment

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

In this experience, I have learned numerous things. The most important though in my opinion is patience. Working with neurodivergent populations requires a lot of patience and understanding.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part of this experience was 100% the residents. They are a joy to be around and care for.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

I have always had the plan to pursue my Masters and go into Clinical Psychology. While this experience has not changed my path, it has definitely made me more equipped to work for diverse populations if and when needed.
