Description of the Organization

Genesis is a division of the Leggett and Platt Work Furniture corporation that operates using cellular manufacturing techniques with an employee force of 250. Genesis is a product-complete supplier where high-end products are designed, assembled, and shipped directly to the distributor or end-user. Our capabilities include a full-service upholstery shop with dedicated work areas for each product line.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

I participated in many projects in my experience at Genesis Seating. Shelving units and manufacturing fixtures were created to improve ergonomics and efficiency within the cell of a main chair line of Herman Miller, as well as cell layouts, which were redesigned to increase efficiency. A proposal was created for the re-design of an assembly station for the Eames Plastic and Wire chair line from Herman Miller. Torque specifications were gathered for battery, pneumatic, and electric drills from each cell in the factory. Finally, I re-designed a leather buck to expand and contract to improve ergonomics for the leather cutters.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I gained knowledge in my ability to create manufacturing fixtures through design in Solidworks, woodworking, and metalworking.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part of my co-op experience is the trust in my ability to conduct an assigned project with little to no supervision by myself.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

My experience at Genesis Seating has further affirmed my goal of wanting to pursue a career in furniture design and manufacturing. I have had a lot of fun during this experience and look forward to my next semester at Genesis.
