Experience Information

Employer: U.S. Figure Skating
Job Title: Intern
Major: Sport Management
Received Credit: Yes

Description of the Organization

U.S. Figure Skating is located in Colorado Springs, Colorado and is a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee. They are a small to medium sized National Governing Body, but also one of the fastest growing. U.S. Figure Skating regulates the sport, and defines the standard of skating proficiency. It specifies the rules for testing, competitions and all other figure skating related activities

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

My responsibilities included everything from hosting VIP and memorial fund events at the 2019 US Figure Skating Championships, to working in the Figure Skating Museum archives. I was even tasked with transporting and getting repair quotes for an Olympic gold medal!

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I learned that interpersonal skills are valued within the sports industry and they can be useful in every situation. I also discovered that you need to be as flexible as possible during the days of the events. Things can go wrong and spiral out of control and everyone needs to be able to think quickly and keep things running smoothly.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part of the experience was how many amazing new people I met during my internship. From the professional connections I made with my co-workers, to the fans I met at the events, it was a life changing experience.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

This internship has opened my eyes to the event management world. I enjoyed being able to see what goes on behind the scenes in order to be able to put on a World Championship Figure Skating event. This has helped me decide that I do not want to settle for a 9-5 desk job.
