Description of the Organization
Oakridge Public Schools are located in Muskegon, MI. They have an upper (grades 4-6) and lower elementary (grades K-3) school. Their middle school and high school are within the same big building.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
I administered activities that help students (grades K-6) with executive functioning, emotional regulation, and mindfulness skills. I administered/took notes for threat assessments Provided a safe space for students who were struggling and needed to discuss how they were feeling. Being a member within IEP meetings.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
Comforting/helping students by still maintaining professionalism and appropriate boundaries. The differences between roles of a school social worker, school counselor, and school psychologist. Learning about the mental health resources available to students in Muskegon County. Empathy and patience. The differences between group counseling and individual counseling. How to run/form small group counseling session based on students' needs.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My supervisor and the staff. My supervisor, Jenna, made sure I was able to experience each of the different roles within a school district. She made sure I was in control of what I wanted to see more/less of so I could solidify which role interested me the most. The staff was very welcoming and gave me many opportunities to see what they do for work. Everyone answered any questions I had about their career, I have gained so much knowledge here. My other favorite part was the students at Oakridge. I have connected with so many students that I will, personally, remember for so long. Allowing me to sit in on sessions where they are vulnerable and sharing their stories has helped open my eyes to how many things happen within students' lives that we may not even know about.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
This experience was one of the best experiences I have gotten out of GVSU. Because of this internship experience I am very solidified on pursuing my MSW and have the goal of becoming a school social worker.
