Description of the Organization

WMRECC acts as a liaison and service facilitator for refugees in Grand Rapids by assisting students in the placement and enrollment process, tutoring, language-learning, and parent support.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

I acted as an administration intern and filed family files, a conference intern by assisting in the orchestration of an refugees education strategies conference and as a peer support intern by facilitating a elementary student after school group.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I learned administration skills, and a bit about the refugee placement process. I also was able to work directly with refugee students.

Favorite Part of the Experience

Networking at the conference or working with the Somali children.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

The internship has given me an inside look at the nonprofit sector of refugee work, and has helped me better understand the process of relocating refugees in the US.
