Description of the Organization
The Michigan Immigrant Rights Center is a non-profit legal firm with 3 offices in Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Ann Arbor that provides free legal services to immigrants in a variety of areas.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
I spoke with clients in Spanish, completed typical office tasks of filing, coping, and mailing. However, I also worked on documents and got a real hands-on experience in immigration law.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
I learned the immigration system and how immigration law works. I also learned more Spanish skills and more confidence speaking Spanish.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite part was the people. Everyone I met from clients to people that work at MIRC are fabulous, wonderful people.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
This internship has influenced my career goals by solidifying going to law school for me as well as opening my mind to the possibility of being an immigration attorney.
