Description of the Organization

Spearheaded and co-chaired by John Canepa, Dick DeVos and David Frey, Grand Action is a not-for-profit organization comprised of more than 250 individuals from throughout the community. Its primary objectives have been to identify downtown building and revitalization projects, to galvanize public opinion and support for these projects, and to design and implement funding strategies for each project, including securing enough private sector support to guarantee funding from existing public funds. Grand Action is an outgrowth of the Grand Vision Committee. In April, 1991, Dick DeVos assembled more than 50 West Michigan community leaders and volunteers from the business, labor, civic, academic and sports sectors to explore the possibility of building an arena and expanding and renovating local convention facilities. In April, 1993, Grand Vision officially changed its name to Grand Action and set-up offices at 120 Lyon N.W. John Canepa and David Frey joined Dick DeVos as Co-chairs of the new organization.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

I completed general administrative/clerical tasks, such as answering phones and getting the mail. I also helped prepare for Grand Action committee meetings. I represented Grand Action at an event at the Downtown Market. I managed the Market Grove Community Campaign where I was in charge of orders, data entry, and fundraising. I managed the Market Grove Facebook page as well. Also, I designed invitations for our two Christmas parties. I filled in twice for Abby who is the Executive Assistant.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I gained experience in Excel and Word programs. I also became a more independent worker who can make judgement on my own behalf. I also gained the skills of communication, problem-solving, and strategic-planning skills. I figured out the career I want to pursue after graduation as well.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part was the diversity of tasks every day. Things are always changing and there are always new things that need to be done. I loved that and it kept me interested and on my toes. I sincerely enjoyed my internship and going to work in Downtown GR every day.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

I actually figured out that I want to become a purchaser or work in administration. I was given the opportunity multiple times to find goods or services for better quality and lower price at my internship. I found a new engraver and new invitations that saved Grand Action money and gave them a more professional look. It was great satisfaction knowing that I made a difference and loved the process of finding these new products/services. Also, I found out that I am capable of doing multiple jobs. I practiced many different fields while at my internship including: marketing, administration, event planning, and data entry.
