Description of the Organization

Patient Access is dealing with insurance, collections, and registration in the hospital. I worked with the financial counselors, registration desk personnel in the ER and patients access coordinators.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

My summer project was to rewrite the registration policy for the ER. I observed in the emergency department, followed along with the registration desk employees, and was trained on the Health Quest computer system to gather information on how to fix the policy. I also collected all insurance information from every coordinator and created a data base so new associates can easily gain access to all insurance companies. Created maps with the original floor plans of the hospital showing how to get to the conference rooms. I also wrote directions to every location in the hospital.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I learned how to work with Excel better. I learned how to register patients in the ER and navigate around the computer data base called Health Quest.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part of this whole experience was meeting all of the staff involved in patient access. Everyone was extremely kind and helpful. I really enjoyed going to work because it was actually something I enjoyed doing every day.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

I have learned that for my future I want to be in a work area where I can talk and interact with patients. As much as I enjoyed the internship I realized I do not want to sit at a desk all day. When I spent time in the Emergency Department the time just flew by which made the work day much more enjoyable.
