Description of the Organization

The Refugee Education Center supports refugees in their journey to become fully participating members of the West Michigan community. They envision a thriving, multicultural West Michigan community where all have an opportunity to pursue a better future! It is a pretty small organization but they do a lot!

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

I did a variety of different things. I did a lot of paperwork, working on case files, going on home visits, learning how to work with interpreters, and a lot of other behind the scenes work.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I learned so much more about the refugee experience and the challenges they face when coming to the United States. I learned how to work with interpreters, manage case files, and meet with refugee families.

Favorite Part of the Experience

My favorite part was the hands on experience I got. I am not sure a lot of internships really allow you to be able to get this up close and personal with their work.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

I just got into the Masters of Social Work program at GVSU so I am really excited to take what I learned here and apply it in my grad program.
