Description of the Organization
This organization aims to help individuals in the Grand Rapids Community who need extra assistance with chronic disease management, community health education, child care education, etc.. Spectrum Health Healthier Communities is a small department but they manage several different programs. I worked closely with the Senior Data Analyst and Epidemiologist on our team.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
During my time at Spectrum Health Healthier Communities I had the opportunity to work on several different types of projects. These projects included assisting with grant writing, analyzing the patients social determinants of health risks in a couple different programs, lots of data visualizations, and anything else that the team needed assistance with.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
I gained a lot of knowledge about how an office and team is supposed to work together. Everyone that I worked with always had such a positive attitude and were willing to help you out when you got stuck. I also gained a lot of knowledge about the grant writing process and how to collect data to support the goals of the grant.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite part of this internship was getting to work with people who were always willing to help when I got stuck on a task. Even when there were tight deadlines to make and things got a little stressful, everyone always had a positive attitude.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
This internship has confirmed that I would love to work for a hospital or for a public health department where I would get to interact with the community.
