Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
Some specific skills I gained through this experience was created to compel prisoners to pay for their time spent in Lenawee County Jail. State law allows jails to collect for room and board, medical, and dental service expenses. Prisoners in Lenawee County are charged $43.28 per day. The Economic Recovery Unit is designed to utilize parts of the Economic Crimes Unit's skill to set to manage and collect these funds, which are by law owed to Lenawee County.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite part was having the opportunity to learn new things in the criminal justice system especially, because it was things that were going on in the community that I grew up in. Along with meeting everyone I worked with every day; they were all so nice which made me more excited to go each day.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
My experience in the prosecuting office has been very beneficial to me in shaping which direction I want my career to go. It gave me firsthand experience to how the criminal justice system works along with the economic recovery unit, from case preparations, courtroom proceedings and garnishing wages, and also allows me to see vital roles that prosecutors play every day in upholding justice and public safety. Working closely with different attorneys, victims, and law enforcement officials help me understand the importance of empathy, advocacy, and integrity. It really reenforce my desire to pursue a legal career focused on public service. This internship helped strengthen my desire for prosecutor rather than defense.
