Trevor Thomas Internship

Experience Information

Employer: Trevor for Congress
Job Title: Intern
Major: Political Science
Received Credit: Yes
Paid: No
Abroad: No

Description of the Organization

Trevor Thomas was the first Grand Valley State Alumnus to ever run for U.S. Congress. Trevor was also the first openly gay man in the state of Michigan to ever run for U.S. Congress. Trevor was running in the 3rd district as a democrat. Trevor for Congress worked endlessly to get Trevor elected into Congress.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

I met with community members, made numerous phone calls, helped collect signatures to put Trevor on the ballot, started a student organization, planned events, and stuffed envelopes.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I learned that the amount of effort it takes to get elected is second to none. I learned about how a candidate is able to gain endorsements. I discovered that the media plays an enormous role in how the candidates are perceived by the public. Within campaigns, every detail, schedule, talking point, and event is crafted with a explicit purpose.

Favorite Part of the Experience

I really enjoyed getting to know my co-workers. The people I worked with were very educated and passionate people. I learned the most about society and policy through the conversations I had with them!

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

This internship has given me respect for those who would like to pursue this field. The Trevor Thomas internship has shown me that I would feel more comfortable working within the government and not necessarily on the campaign trail. The days were very long and high stress. I did enjoy my experience however.
