Local Spins is a West Michigan music publication focusing on coverage of concerts, festivals, and in-depth artist feature stories. Along with West Michigan music news, Local Spins prides itself on being the best one-stop shop for anyone interested in keeping up with the West Michigan music scene.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
Most of the tasks given to myself and my fellow interns were concert and festival reviews. After being given a specific event to cover, I was asked to describe the scene of the show, what songs were sung, how the audience reacted to the music, and to get a quote from a concertgoer and/or a band member. We were also given a final project in which we were asked to find a local band, conduct an interview, and piece together a feature story about the band and their influence on the local music scene.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
This internship has greatly improved my interviewing and individual communication skills. Going into this internship, I was extremely afraid to approach strangers or musicians for story quotes. Once this was made a requirement for my assignments, interacting with strangers for information on a story became incredibly natural.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite part of this internship was attending a ridiculous amount of concerts and having the ability to talk to band members, venue employees, and anyone else working behind the scenes to keep live music alive and kicking.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
This internship has gotten me even more excited for my future career. As a journalism student with a love for many different kinds of music, this experience was directly in line with what I want to pursue moving forward after graduation.
