Experience Information

Employer: Johnson Controls, Inc.
Job Title: Software Development Engineer
Major: Electrical Engineering
Received Credit: Yes
Paid: Yes

Description of the Organization

Johnson Controls, Inc. is a global company offering products and services to optimize energy and operational efficiencies of buildings, automotive batteries, electronics and interior systems for automobiles. I work for our automotive electronics department at Holland, Michigan.

Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed

I worked on software detail design documentation for software architecture design. I also participated in updating a database and project management documentation maintenance activities.

Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience

I learned about how a large software project is developed. I understand more about how software projects are broken down to individual components and how to document the behavior and functionality for components. These are things I can't learn from the small final projects for classes.

Favorite Part of the Experience

Working as a real engineer and making contributions on current projects. Also, seeing and learning how the embedded system software is developed is very interesting.

How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals

With three engineering co-op rotations in different teams, I have become more familiar with the process of how products are developed. The experience of working on the software development team has made me interested in working as a software engineer for the automotive industry and helped me gain the fundamental knowledge that is required by the automotive industry.
