Description of the Organization
Autocam Medical is a medical device contract manufacturer, that specializes in surgical equipment and implants. Their HQ are located in Kentwood, Michigan, and have other plant locations across the United States and internationally with over 700 employees.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
This rotation I continued to provide engineering support at the manufacturing cell I am a part of, which specializes in laser marking the surgical equipment after the primary operations (that machine the main geometry of the part), and enter the secondary operations. The value streams converge at the manufacturing cell I get to be involved at, and I get to have hands on experience with High Mix and High Volume components. The main project I developed this rotation was a discrete event simulation (DES) using JaamSim to simulate the production output of my manufacturing cell with data collected with the product data management system and the PLC's in the machines. This allowed for the necessary data to be fed into the simulation that I made, and compared with real life data for validation. This simulation is the first one that has ever been made by a co-op student, and I was able to successfully develop a simulation that can accurately reflect the behavior in the manufacturing floor and simulate "what if" scenarios.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
I was able to keep expanding my knowledge on standardizing processes, data analysis, simulation development and validation, and develop professional relationships with my peers and superiors.
Favorite Part of the Experience
Being able to apply skills I have learned through school, but also self taught skills that are unique to me, are what makes me a unique asset to my team and company. Seeing the fruit of years of hard work pay off by people trusting my judgement and skills because of the quality of my work, and not by my title, is one of the biggest compliments I have received this semester. This is how I want to conduct myself in my work environment wherever I go, and I get to be blessed with an amazing company such as Autocam Medical to experience this at.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
Being in the last year before graduating, I feel like a world of opportunities has opened up to me. A new stage of life is right around the corner for me, where I am not only working towards a degree now (still am of course) but towards growing into the professional I want to grow to be throughout my career. The professional connections I have made have also incredibly influenced and motivated my goals, as I see them as long term professional connections. I feel so encouraged and motivated to serve others with my career.
