Description of the Organization
Grand Valley men's basketball team is comprised of about 25 people between players, coaches, and personnel. The summer is the teams offseason and during this time they hold various summer camps. There are about 13 camps from a kids camp, to a camp where top high schools come and are recruited by top college coaches in the state.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
It depended on the camp but I ran score clocks for games and kept track of stats, taught drills, coached, refereed games, helped register teams, ordered food, and worked admissions.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
I gained a better understanding on how to work with and coach kids. I also picked the brains of some coaches and learned more about philosophies and what they look for when recruiting players.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite part was during the kids camp we had for 3 days in a row. I had the opportunity of coaching a group of 6 year olds and it was fun working with them for those few days. Seeing them learn and get better each day was rewarding.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
It has pushed me closer towards wanting to recruit and coach one day. I enjoyed the relationships I made with coaches.
