Description of the Organization
Magnum Engineering provides design and development services to entrepreneurs and companies. This mainly consists of taking a concept from paper, through testing/redesign, and ultimately to a manufacturable stage. Magnum also provides assembly services for mechanical and electrical products.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
This semester I designed a device for our shop that monitored the water flowing into our washing machine. This device consisted of an LCD, push-button/rotary encoder user interface, and a micro-controller. I also did some testing of existing products for a local fish trolling motor company and created a way of scoring their products in a concrete manner. The last project that I worked on was a wireless device that could control the volume of the music in the shop. This was needed because there was no easy way to turn the volume down when customers came for visits. So a wireless remote and audio in-line base were designed to meet these needs.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
This semester I was able to build off of the great circuit layout/design experience that I gained last semester and expand on my embedded C coding abilities. I was also able to hone some data acquisition/analysis skills in an unconstrained setting.
Favorite Part of the Experience
My favorite part about this co-op experience was the fact that I was given ample time to be able to work on improving my skills related to the Electrical Engineering field. Without tight time constrictions I was able to really focus on improving my skills without really having to worry about failing or doing something right the first time around.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
This experience has strengthened my view that I want to end up in a place like Magnum. The design and development process are incredibly fascinating to me and I enjoy it every time I go through it. At Magnum projects have relatively short design and development cycles and the Engineers are often working on products from all sorts of industries. It really keeps every day interesting and that is what I want in my career.
