Experience Information
Employer: The Lanthorn
Job Title: Lanthorn Photographer
Major: Film & Video
Received Credit: Yes
Paid: Yes
Abroad: No
Description of the Organization
The Lanthorn is a media and newspaper committee for the college highlighting all events that happen at Grand Valley. I worked primarily on individual assignments assigned to me by my boss who also worked as our lead photographer. There were 6 or 7 other photographers who I had worked with. They assign us with a task and we execute that task each week to provide photos for there media and newspapers that they publish every week.
Description of the Tasks/Projects Completed
I took photos of the Medical buildings in downtown Grand Rapids, DEI speech, Woman's Basketball game against Ferris State, Delivering while Black speech, GVPD and their squad vehicles, and a Dungeons & Dragons Club meeting.
Skills/Knowledge Gained Through The Experience
I learned the importance of exposure and lighting when it came to the environment around myself working with different equipment and camera settings to capture that perfect photo. I learned different styles and techniques when it came to positioning a camera whether that be at a sporting event, speech, or just out and about in the nature or city. My editing skills also had improved as I was able to edit my own images.
Favorite Part of the Experience
Working with other photographers and getting their insights on how they work and what works best when coming to the date of the event.
How the Experience Influenced Future Career Goals
I am more confident taking photos for anything now. I thought that I would only enjoy sports or wildlife photography. After going to all of these speeches and clubs, I can now say that I am capable of working somewhere that requires these kind of photographers and expand my potential opportunities when it comes to finding my future career.
